F&O data for Monday 28 September did not come through in this week's ingestion, so the figures below cover three sessions, Tuesday 29 September through Thursday 1 October, NSE itself was also closed Friday 2 October for Gandhi Jayanti. Tuesday was September's monthly expiry, and futures turnover that day alone came to INR 274,569.1 crores, more than the other two days combined, as positions closed out of the September contract and rolled into October. Across the three sessions, futures turnover totalled INR 435,068.7 crores and options premium turnover totalled INR 162,315.8 crores. The Nifty 50's October contract fell 3.15%, from 23,263.6 to 22,530.3, and Bank Nifty's October contract fell 2.09%, from 55,962.6 to 54,794.8. Here is the detail, based on insights from bhavcopydata.com.

Futures, the rollover completes and October inherits the book
Last week's post flagged the ramp into Tuesday's expiry. This week that contract actually expired, so a baseline to week end comparison, from Friday 25 September to Thursday 1 October, catches the October contract absorbing nearly the entire book rather than a fresh directional signal. Comparing open interest and price across that window, and keeping only contracts with at least INR 1 crore of turnover across the week, 195 stock futures landed in short buildup and only 15 in long buildup, with nothing left in short covering or long unwinding. That is a near mechanical result of the rollover itself, open interest in the October contract rose in almost every single name this week regardless of which way its price moved, so the buildup label on its own says more about Tuesday's calendar than about fresh conviction.
Price direction is the more useful signal here, the same conclusion last week's post reached. Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited (KOTAKBANK) led gainers, up 4.11% on INR 4,910.9 crores of turnover, followed by Infosys Limited (INFY), up 3.22% on INR 5,207.7 crores, and Coforge Limited (COFORGE), up 2.02%. On the other side, PB Fintech Limited (POLICYBZR) was again the sharpest mover on the site, down 16.15% on INR 2,295.5 crores of turnover, extending last week's 33.67% plunge to a combined two week decline of close to 44%. Patanjali Foods Limited (PATANJALI) fell 12.75%, Bajaj Auto Limited (BAJAJ-AUTO) fell 11.48%, and Vodafone Idea Limited (IDEA) fell 11.31% on the week's third busiest contract, INR 3,754.0 crores of turnover.
By turnover, HDFC Bank Limited (HDFCBANK) was the week's busiest single stock future at INR 9,026.6 crores, down 2.28%, followed by BSE Limited (BSE) at INR 6,540.7 crores, down 4.00%, and Reliance Industries Limited (RELIANCE) at INR 6,214.8 crores, down 4.69%. ICICI Bank Limited (ICICIBANK), State Bank of India (SBIN), Axis Bank Limited (AXISBANK) and Bharti Airtel Limited (BHARTIARTL) all traded over INR 3,000 crores and all closed lower, consistent with the broader weak tone in the cash market this week.
We checked whether any of this week's largest net buy names in block and bulk deals also showed up building futures positions in the same direction this week, and found no match on the buy side. BSE Limited (BSE) stood out instead on the sell side, net sold by INR 508.8 crores in block and bulk deals this week while its October futures contract fell 4.00% on open interest up 70.97%, cash and derivatives pointing the same bearish direction on the same stock in the same week.
Options, Nifty's new weekly series opens with a mild tilt toward puts
The Nifty's active weekly contract switched expiries mid-week. On Tuesday 29 September, its own expiry day, the put call ratio by open interest closed at 0.882. The next weekly contract, expiring 6 October, took over as the active series on Wednesday at 0.646 and closed the week at 0.685, a mild drift toward puts within that fresh series as the index kept falling. Bank Nifty and Nifty Financial Services (FINNIFTY) both rolled from their weekly contracts straight into their October monthly contracts after Tuesday's expiry, Bank Nifty's ratio easing from 0.875 on Wednesday to 0.865 on Thursday, close to balanced.
Options premium turnover totalled INR 162,315.8 crores across the three sessions. The Nifty's fresh weekly expiry, 6 October, was again the busiest contract on the site at INR 71,810.9 crores, and Tuesday's own expiring contract added a further INR 33,978.7 crores on its last day alone. Away from the indices, BSE Limited (BSE) options were the most active on any single stock at INR 701.4 crores, followed by PB Fintech Limited (POLICYBZR) at INR 669.4 crores, HDFC Bank Limited (HDFCBANK) at INR 635.4 crores, Reliance Industries Limited (RELIANCE) at INR 618.0 crores and Bajaj Auto Limited (BAJAJ-AUTO) at INR 539.4 crores.
