NSE F&O data for this week covers the full five session week, Monday 5 October through Friday 9 October 2026. Futures turnover across the week totalled INR 357,733.9 crores and options premium turnover totalled INR 294,911.1 crores. The Nifty 50 rose 0.44%, from 22,422.0 to 22,520.5, and the Bank Nifty rose 1.48%, from 54,450.8 to 55,256.7, both closing the week higher. Here is the detail, based on insights from bhavcopydata.com.

Futures, stock positioning tilts more bearish than the index move suggests
We compared open interest and price in every stock futures contract from Wednesday 1 October, the last trading day before this week began, to Friday 9 October, keeping only contracts with at least INR 5 crores of turnover across the week. Unlike last week's comparison, which caught September's monthly contract rolling into October and read as a mechanical rollover rather than a real signal, no monthly contract expired this week, so this reading reflects actual positioning. Of 529 qualifying stock futures contracts, 259 fell into short buildup against 173 in long buildup, with 65 in short covering and 32 in long unwinding. More stock futures built fresh bearish positions than fresh bullish ones this week, even though both the Nifty 50 and the Bank Nifty closed the week higher.
ITC Limited (ITC) led the long buildup group, up 3.69% on INR 5,297.9 crores of turnover as open interest rose 32.9%, from 148.5 million to 197.3 million. Sagility India Limited (SAGILITY) also built fresh long positions, up 2.01% as open interest rose 10.1% on INR 317.5 crores of turnover.
In short covering, Vodafone Idea Limited (IDEA) saw the week's single largest open interest decline across all stock futures, down 194.1 million units, a 3.0% fall, even as its price rose 2.36% on INR 2,142.8 crores of turnover. ICICI Bank Limited (ICICIBANK) covered a larger share of its own book, open interest down 8.5% as price rose 2.94% on INR 7,430.3 crores of turnover.
Short buildup carried the week's steepest single stock futures price falls. Ujjivan Small Finance Bank Limited (UJJIVANSFB) fell 6.36% as open interest rose 181.4% on INR 287.2 crores of turnover, and Adani Power Limited (ADANIPOWER) fell 4.17% as open interest rose 5.3% on INR 1,984.2 crores of turnover, both consistent with fresh bearish bets rather than existing longs exiting.
Long unwinding was led by HDFC Bank Limited (HDFCBANK), which was also the week's busiest single stock future at INR 11,503.2 crores, down 1.63% as open interest fell 7.4%. Bandhan Bank Limited (BANDHANBNK) fell 9.44%, the steepest single stock futures decline of the week, as open interest fell 7.9% on INR 204.5 crores of turnover.
By turnover, the Nifty 50's October contract was the week's busiest at INR 40,936.7 crores, followed by the Bank Nifty's October contract at INR 16,620.4 crores. Away from the indices, HDFC Bank Limited (HDFCBANK) led all stock futures at INR 11,503.2 crores, followed by ICICI Bank Limited (ICICIBANK) at INR 7,430.3 crores, Reliance Industries Limited (RELIANCE) at INR 6,606.4 crores, Infosys Limited (INFY) at INR 5,982.4 crores and BSE Limited (BSE) at INR 5,982.1 crores.
We checked whether this week's largest block and bulk deal buyers also showed up building futures positions in the same direction. Three names appeared in both datasets, ICICI Bank Limited (ICICIBANK), Reliance Industries Limited (RELIANCE) and SBI Life Insurance Company Limited (SBILIFE), but in each case the buy value and the sell value were identical to the rupee, INR 258.1 crores for ICICI Bank Limited (ICICIBANK), INR 239.9 crores for Reliance Industries Limited (RELIANCE) and INR 107.3 crores for SBI Life Insurance Company Limited (SBILIFE). That pattern points to matched crossing trades rather than net buying conviction, so none of the three count as a genuine signal this week.
Options, Bank Nifty's put call ratio climbs steadily through the week
The Nifty 50's October monthly contract put call ratio by open interest opened the week at 0.9606, dipped to 0.9289 on Thursday 8 October, and closed the week at 0.9737, little changed overall. The Bank Nifty's October contract told a clearer story, its put call ratio climbing from 0.8646 to 0.9831 across the week as puts accumulated faster than calls, even as the index itself gained 1.48%. Nifty Financial Services (FINNIFTY) was the most volatile of the three, its ratio swinging from 0.7049 to a midweek high of 1.2458 on Wednesday 7 October before closing the week at 0.5583.
Options premium turnover totalled INR 294,911.1 crores across the week. The Nifty 50's weekly contract expiring 13 October was the busiest on the site at INR 123,494.6 crores, and the contract that expired 6 October added a further INR 99,644.7 crores in the two sessions it was active. The Bank Nifty's October monthly contract added INR 15,821.1 crores, and the Nifty 50's own October monthly contract added INR 12,075.5 crores. Away from the indices, Tata Consultancy Services Limited (TCS) options were the most active on any single stock at INR 1,253.5 crores, followed by BSE Limited (BSE) at INR 1,215.0 crores, One97 Communications Limited (PAYTM) at INR 1,113.2 crores, HDFC Bank Limited (HDFCBANK) at INR 1,112.7 crores and Reliance Industries Limited (RELIANCE) at INR 1,036.7 crores.
